about

What Does Your Heart Say?

There are dozens of languages spoken by modern day Mayan people in southern Mexico. One of those languages is called Tzeltal. In Tzeltal when you want to ask somebody, "How are you?" the literal translation is "What does your heart say?"

I went through dramatic changes as I wrote most of these songs. In dreams, in conversations, and in other forms I constantly kept receiving the message, "Follow your heart," so the next step was to ask myself, "What does your heart say?" Too often we get caught up in what we are told or expected to do, and we forget what the heart is saying. Or sometimes what our heart is saying is just far too difficult or painful for us to face. But if we don't heed it, it just swells up and terrorizes us until we make some changes. The heart can't be denied.

I sing and play guitar, flute, melodica, doumbek, and other percussion on these songs. All the additional percussion is done with my mouth! It was so much fun. I recorded all songs on the Zoom H4n at home and mixed them all on my Powerbook G4 Mac in Garage Band, except "Life is but a Dream," which I recorded and mixed with PreSonus Studio One software using the RME UFX digital interface. "Tumbling Stone" was recorded live using the BOSS RC-50 loop station to loop the vocals live.

I wrote all the songs, except "Tumbling Stone." That's an old traditional song by an unknown author. I learned it from my dear friend Colin Boggess. Thanks, Colin!

I did all field recordings except for the ocean sound before and after "Tumbling Stone," which is a public domain recording downloaded off the internet. (I don't live near the ocean, unfortunately!)

I created all the artwork in high school! Hooray! It's finally seeing the light of day!

Doug Marion put the songs all together mixed with sounds and made them flow and sound all fancy pants. Thanks, Doug!
